I’m a fringe case then lol, I keep them until they actually break, they do last 4-5 years for me, sometimes more, I don’t make intense use of my phone, I much prefer using my PC for basically everything.

True, I bought an ipad more than 7 years ago to read because e-readers are too small for my liking.
I don’t use it much anymore since I have an e-writer now, but it still receives updates regularly, whatever comes to my phone comes to it as well, it’s impressive.
Happy to hear companies are finally getting it.
Well, Google isn’t famous for being reliable in the long run with their services, Apple is proven at this point, tho who knows, I’ll wait a few years and see if Google is still at it with their Pixels.
That’s the reason why I switched to iPhone after many years of Android, security updates are vital nowadays with all the sensitive data and apps we use on our phones, Apple is the only one that guarantees al least 5 years, iPhones are not too expensive if you don’t buy the latest models and I’d rather avoid supporting companies that don’t understand the importance of security.
While I could understand this approach for big enterprises, to avoid the hassle of managing thousands of employees PCs, I don’t understand it for home use.
I mean, people who want a PC at home, want it for the multi-purpose capabilities and power in gaming, not to mention full control over it.
Those who only use the PC for email, browsing the internet and watching videos, are better served with a tablet, they’re so powerful nowadays that you don’t really need a PC for those simple tasks, students would be better off with chromebooks, they’re even cheaper, a few types of jobs, like professional graphics for example, are better done with a MAC, and probably other things I’m forgetting right now.
I fully switched to Linux years ago, but if I were still using Windows, I know for sure I’d be furious if my computer stopped working only because the internet went down or MS servers had some downtime.
I’d love to know what they know that I don’t to be so sure this won’t blow up in their faces.
Lemmy.world is not upgrading to 0.18 because they removed captcha, admins are waiting for 0.18.1 in which captcha is being re-implemented, it’s discussed here: https://lemmy.world/post/469761
Valid concerns IMO, I was shocked to see how advanced those GPT bots are.
I was on a discord chat and there were 4-5 of them chatting with people there, at some point they started arguing with each other, if they weren’t clearly marked as bots I probably wouldn’t be able to recognize them.
Hilarious on one side, scary on the other side, I can’t imagine how much damage they could do in malicious hands.
Welcome to lemmy :D
Why are there so many servers letting u see the same content?
For the same reason there are different subreddits talking about the same things, freedom of choice.
It’s like having multiple Apollo sites that lets u access the “fediverse”
You do, there are different apps with different names that let you access reddit, the fact you chose Apollo doesn’t mean everyone else did.
Why can’t we all agree on one server to access the whole thing.
Because that would totally defeat the purpose of the fediverse, that is, having many decentralized instances so that if a few die the fediverse itself can go on living regardless.
It’s also to avoid corporate control, if everything was a on single server it would be way too easy for a company to get hold of it, like it is now it’s extremely difficult.
Because if you don’t you risk burnout?
Terraria. It’s a sort of hybrid between a minecraft 2d and an action RPG, really fun game with lots of content.
You can play it as standalone or as co-op and the server component is included in the game for you to host it if you want.
Tho If by interesting you mean MMOs, there are emulators for a few of them, WoW is my favorite (TrinityCore, AzerothCore), but know that opening them up to public use is illegal (copyright violation).
Edit: added github links to wow emulators.
This. Stadia was one of the last example, they’ll kill this new service too after a few years, it’s not worth to even consider using.
They offer software updates for >6 years
That was the reason why I migrated to iPhone last year.
I used Android for many years, but I got tired of vendors stopping system updates after 6 months or so of a model being out.
I keep my phone at least 4-5 years, even more if it doesn’t break, and with all the sensitive data and apps we keep on it nowadays (mobile banking, digital identities, authenticators, etc.) it’s not acceptable to stay years without security fixes.
It’s true that apple devices are expensive but it’s enough to not buy the latest models, get a bit older one and you can get it for the same price as a medium-high Android.
TIL what the GAFAM empire is.
Besides that, I think the following quote is key:
Google realized that most XMPP interactions were between Google Talk users anyway. They didn’t care about respecting a protocol they were not 100% in control. So they pulled the plug and announced they would not be federated anymore
I never used Google Talk nor XMPP but I gather XMPP didn’t have enough users to sustain itself.
Chat systems (and Twitter/Facebook similar platforms) need a very high amount of users to be “sustainable” because they are centered on individuals.
The fediverse doesn’t need that many because is centered around meaningful discussions, having too many is even counterproductive because discussions derail into shitposting (look at reddit).
I agree with the blogger when they say
We should not try to include as many people as we can at all cost. We should be honest and ensure people join the Fediverse because they share some of the values behind it
Mainly because if we did, lemmy would go down the drain as much as reddit has done the last few years.
I want Meta blocked because I don’t want their shit coming over here, much more than being worried about them trying to extinguish the fediverse, tho you can be sure they will indeed try.
It’s not a rat, it’s a Lemming.
Reddit is a play on words “I read it -> on reddit”
If I wanted to use logic, I’d say taking both A and B is the only way to have a guaranteed $1,000,000 outcome, because B only could get you money but also nothing.
But, if I choose B only, I’m sort of “forcing” the machine into that kind of prediction, right? I don’t know about this experiment, but since your post says it’s a paradox, I think that’s how it works.
So my choice is B only, the machine has predicted it and I get a nice $1,000,000,000.
Am I totally off? :D
I noticed the same, probably because reddit has become really bad in the last years but I didn’t realize it until I joined here a couple of weeks ago.
It’s indeed refreshing being able to have honest discussions on a platform that’s not infested by bots, propaganda, disguised ads, mass shitposting, hidden agendas, etc.
If lemmy becomes wildly popular to the masses, it’s possible things will change for the worse, who knows, but I’ll enjoy it a lot in the meantime.
Gosh that’s bad! They’re going to break a lot of old forum posts and guides. More than ever we need to migrate out stuff to the fediverse.
I’m doing it exactly like I was doing it on reddit, that is, build up my personal home page with all the communities I want to see then I changed my settings to default to subscribed when opening Lemmy instead of All.
Every now and then I check the list of all communities to see if there’s something new worth following, that way it’s also easier to avoid communities that do a lot of spamming, overwhelming the smaller (more interesting IMO) ones.
