  • I just did this for the motherboard on my desktop PC (thanks Intel and your CPU update!) and it requires a clean boot device of some kind to boot into UEFI. It has nothing to do with the OS of the device.

In my case, yeah, I did it from a thumb drive, but I could see making a boot CD that has the bios files on it as well.

OTOH if you have the capability of burning and booting a boot CD it’s probably way easier to just use a thumb drive.

One thing I’ll note, on my motherboard, only using the keyboard to navigate the UEFI menu failed to update. :( I had to connect a physical mouse to run the menus.

  • First started using Macs with OS7 and I find the whole Mac vs. Windows arguments silly. Windows 386, 3.1, and 3.11 were garbage, yes, but all that changed with Windows 95 and it instantly went head and shoulders above MacOS.

OSX didn’t come about until 2001. So Windows had the edge for 6 years. To give you some idea, the initial G3 iMacs that came out in 1998 were still running OS8.

The big problem with using a Mac back then is that Steve Jobs had his own ideas about the way things should work and the lack of compatability with other industry standards was a problem.

Example: Getting my Palm Pilot to sync with my iMac was a NIGHTMARE. I worked with Palm support for several weeks and we finally got it working, if the dock was connected to the iMac directly. The USB ports on the keyboard didn’t carry enough voltage to operate properly.

Windows machine? No problem… until Windows 98, when Microsoft decided to prioritize Windows CE devices and intentionally broke Palm functionality. That was fun! Took a while to get the driver updates to fix that one!

  • I dunno, it seems like there’s a bunch to me… it’s not my thing personally, props to you that it is, but I had to block a bunch out of my “All” feed.

A lot of it is gay FURRY porn which is ENTIRELY it’s own deal though. That may or may not be your thing. When I first joined Lemmy I was like “Wow, that’s a lot of Yiff…”

Then there are the homoerotic communities that aren’t necessarily capital “P” Porn like “maleform”.

  • American malls are three categories. Generally when people say “the mall”, they mean big, indoor, enclosed malls. That’s what is dying a slow death.

    A local example for me:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clackamas_Town_Center

The problem has been the large anchor stores are going out of business and the stores that remain struggle to survive.

The kind of mall you describe, Americans call “strip malls” and are much smaller and open to the elements. A grocery store, maybe a bank, fast food, not an official post office, but a pack and ship location, sometimes a DMV. That kind of thing.

Strip malls also struggle, there’s one by my house where the big grocery store just closed leaving it maybe 50% vacant.

We also have stand alone grocery stores that aren’t part of strip malls that collect other small stores around it like mini-moons. Barbershops, laundromats, liquor stores.

As long as the grocery store operates, everyone does fine.

Edit Almost forgot… “Big Box Complexes”. Not really malls, just large block stores sharing a common parking lot. So like a Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, all stand alone stores with shared parking.
