  • I agree it’s irrelevant in terms of living our lives, altho perhaps greatly relevant for those in relevant sciences.

I think there’s also a good argument that we already know we’re in a simulation. That is-- if we already know a lot about the tiny building blocks of the universe, how they interact, and what forces govern them across various levels, then we can conceive of framing the whole of observable reality in to a massive, but known & quantifiable set of calculations… or a simulation.

  • My lease renewal typically gets tendered in mid-March, but ~5pm Friday I noticed that I still hadn’t gotten anything yet. Unfortunately, the office was closed for the next 2.5days while I nervously paced and fretted, wondering what had gone wrong, and whether I’d need to move soon (having a disability makes it a major ordeal).

Come Monday I met with my property manager, and she told me that the new mgmt company sends out renewals later than usual, and that I should be perfectly fine. Still, the new company doesn’t have a great reputation, and I have no idea how much they’re going to boost my rent. Sounds like a lot of people are getting gouged upon that these days, so fingers still crossed.

Yeah, I get the Gaza angle, but let’s not get it twisted and assume that this is all Biden’s doing. The fact is, pretty much every US regime going back many decades has been supportive of Israel, and likely would have operated about the same in this case. And let’s not overlook that Biden has also been pushing for reconciliation and peaceful solutions, too. He definitely hasn’t been unilaterally pro-Israel’s actions, far as I can tell.

Also, if “Gaza” is really the hill some people are wiling to die on, overlooking all of Biden’s overall good work, then they may find next year that they’re no longer living in the democracy they used to.

Meanwhile you have Trump and the right-wingers in office gleefully chomping at the bit to sabotage Biden’s efforts to turn around the Ukrainian war, which does also include genocide.

Why do so many non-right wingers demonize Biden so casually?

He was just ranked 15th-best president by a large body of presidential scholars, and his record has been impressive despite the chronic automatic blocking by Groupies Of Putin. Details here: r/WhatBidenHasDone; I just wish there was a FV counterpart.

  • I really like the trending communities; great way to find new communities…

Hmm, I don’t really get that. Most of the time “trending communities” seem to be newly-created communities with little if any content. Considering how common it is for people to grab a community name and sit on it indefinitely, I feel like the ‘trending detection’ formula could be tweaked to display newer communities with solid growth, instead.

…or remind you to look for something you hadn’t thought about.

I salute the spirit of that, but the number of healthy communities across the FV seems pretty limited so far. Sure, it’s not that hard to find ghost communities with search tools (I tend to use this one), but that’s kind of a bittersweet feeling.

  • In my case I found that creating a community that was missing here, then regularly populating it with content, has worked wonders. That it was not just a good way to get myself engaged here, as well as to grow the Fediverse, but to attract users from Reddit and other places given a bit of cross-posting.

Seriously, I’m not sure how many people understand that right now, given that new content is generated relatively slowly across the FV, that any new community putting quality stuff out there is going to get a *hugely* larger proportion of eyes on it. That’s compared to similar communities on Reddit, FB, etc, in which smaller / newer communities tend to get completely drowned out in the ALL streams.

My own niche community (Euro graphic novels) already has 350+ subscribers in less than 90 days. Even for Reddit that’s a nice jump-start and growth. Which is why I urge people to jump on this opportunity now, because eventually it’s probably going to dry up.

Indeed, maybe it would be good to get this message out to people on Reddit, FB, etc who always wanted to start a sub/community, but the opportunities were ‘all filled up’ already.
