“Tankie” in the traditional sense of someone who uncritically supports the USSR in the handling of 1956’s uprising? Probably not.

While Kruschev’s use of tanks in 1956 was heavy handed, the Hungarian alliance with the Axis in WWII and participation of Operation Barbarossa, lingering fascist sympathisers and nationalists remained in Hungary.

This coupled with the Communist Party of Hungary’s less than equitable redistribution of land/castles/other properties earlier in the 1950’s (favouring giving properties to ranking CPH members instead of distributing it to the proletariat equally). This created resentment for the Party, and an image of the Communists as no better than the Monarchy that came before or the Fascists that came after.

The Hungarian uprising had elements of fascist sympathisers, monarchists, bourgeoisie, etc but also legitimate critics of the handling of the situation. It never should have come to that, and a more educated/self critical Communist Party in Hungary could have prevented things from getting that far. The people should have benefitted a lot more from a better redistribution of wealth.

The above issues coupled with Soviet distrust of Hungarians (since they did invade the Soviet Union in the 40’s) led to a swift and harsh reaction towards the uprising, seeing it as just a reactionary revolt.

Now, am I a tankie in the Reddit redefinition, of anyone that critically supports Cuba, China, Vietnam and their style of government? Yeah, I suppose I am. This is no more radical a position than Malcolm X or the Black Panthers who also supported the late USSR, China and Cuba.

  • If you, the civilian, donates to a legitimate cause, the billion dollar company won’t be able to claim that donation on their tax deductions.

If they donate, it’s a zero sum game. Maybe 5 mins in the spotlight for alturism.

But if you give them the money to donate on your behalf? They don’t spend a cent and are able to get tax deductions for “philanthropy”. It’s the best possible outcome (for the company).

  • What the fuck are you talking about, most Irish don’t dislike the IRA, what kind of brain-dead take is that? The 1916 IRA are heroes, the British were bombarding Dublin. The black and tans were gunning down civilians, and the IRA were fighting back.

Now, the PIRA was a lot more disliked by the Irish, but after Bloody Sunday feelings became mixed. A lot of folks were vehemently against the PIRA, a lot were in support, but the vast majority just wanted the bloodshed to end.

Even then, by % of civilian casualties, the PIRA had a 30% civilian casualty rate, which isn’t great. But it’s literally better than some of the loyalist paramilitaries which had OVER 50% CIVILIAN CASUALTY RATES.

You go to County Clare and yell Tiochfaidh ár lá on a Saturday night and see how ““universally hated”” the RA are.

And you compare them to ISIS? My god.

Lmao, that’s a testament to communist Cuba’s success. No other form of government could withstand a US embargo for a year and not collapse. Cuba has withstood for DECADES and has surpassed the US in life expectancy. The buildings are kinda shabby, but homelessness, infant mortality, illiteracy are all LOWER than the US, the richest country in the history of the world.

  • If you carjack someone else, commit actual grand theft auto, does that mean the workers in the car factory that produced the car get their pay retroactively revoked?

That’s actual theft, you stole it from the owner, and even then it doesn’t affect the factory workers’ salary at all.

If I get a copy of Starfield from a friend after they’re done playing it, does that count as stealing the devs’ salary?
