  • Yeah, I got tired of being the product. It used to be Google phones were significantly cheaper, that’s just not nearly as much a thing anymore.

Then you have to take the additional steps of finding privacy focused roms etc… It just wasn’t worth the savings to me. There’s things about Android I miss, but the fact that my phone is good for years and years is such a game changer.

I have been gradually transitioning over to proton for additional privacy and I’ve basically completely divorced myself from Google at this point.

  • Serious answer:

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I believe in a religion because I’ve found it to be personally beneficial.

I was a pastor for many years and saw much of the best and worst religion had to offer. I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since COVID broke out and don’t know that I ever will again.

My personal beliefs are still a significant part of my life, but I understand why someone would ask the question that spawned this discussion.

I wouldn’t feel bad using a pejorative for fascists. Neither do I feel bad using a pejorative for other authoritarians. Their disrespect for human dignity, liberty, and worth disqualifies them for protection against such a minor indignity.

Tankies is fine for anyone on the side of the tanks at Tiananmen Square.

  • It might be a new hope, but I couldn’t imagine when or where I saw it.

I still remember my dad renting a vcr to watch empire strikes back. It was well after the release of the Return of the Jedi, but it was the first time we used a VCR.

My family wasn’t poor, but money was tight and so we turned it into a huge home theater experience with lots of special foods and unlimited soda. The last half was basically non-stop terror for me and I loved every minute of it.

I remember being more surprised that Luke lost his hand than Darth Vader being his father. My little kid brain just figured, yeah, that makes sense; not a lot of other potential dad figures lying around.
